Adobe Presenter and Adobe Captivate for Creating Online Learning Materials

Tue 1:15 – 2:00PM — Foyer 5
Kathy Fletcher, West Virginia University

Adobe Presenter is a PowerPoint add-in that was originally developed for use with Adobe Connect (formerly Macromedia Breeze). It makes it easy to record, edit, and synchronize narration and allows you to import your slide notes or script to view while narrating. Flash .swf movies such as those created by Adobe Captivate can be easily imported into the PowerPoint file. It allows you to create a variety of quiz questions that will pause the presentation until the question is answered (and if you wish, until it is answered correctly). Slide navigation with slide titles and a Notes tab are displayed on the left or right of the PowerPoint slides in the published product. The presentation can be published as a Flash movie or as an Adobe Acrobat PDF file (version 9 reader only). It can also be published as a SCORM module and imported into a course management system such as Blackboard Vista.

Adobe Captivate makes it easy to record screen snap shots in a sequence as you demonstrate how to use software, how to accomplish some task on a computer, or a tour of a web-based resource. Captions can be automatically generated based on what you click on. Narration can be recorded or imported. Timing, captions, and slides can be edited and enhanced. You can add interactivity with hot spots that display content or branch to new slides; you can create authentic training simulations where the viewer can try to click on the correct part of the screen to accomplish a task. The Captivate project file can be published as a Flash movie or as a MS Word document that displays each slide and its notes and captions or summarized into a concise “how to do it” Word handout.
